Before I answer, Id' like to ask you to search your hearts for your answer, because when a child reads or is read aloud books, it remains them throughout their lifetime. Books and music inhabit a special magic, by rereading a book or listening to a song you are transported back to the time, place, and feelings you had when you read the book, or listened to certain songs.
Alright, my friends, What children's book made the most impact on you when you were a child?
The book can be a favorite, or an adult novel if you cannot remember.
My favorite children's book was Stuart Little and Charlottes web, both written by E.B.White.
My mother read them both to my brothers and me, and I remembered empathizing with Wilbur in Charlottes Web, and Stuart little when he fell in the down the drain. I read both of these stories to my son, and when I need I felt a sense of security and warm. It was like I was at home on my mother's lap again struggling to keep my eyes open.

There wasn't a children's book that influenced my life at all. I don't remember reading much. I was too busy working on the farm for reading. I read what was required in school, but nothing really sticks out.
ReplyDeleteMy love for reading didn't come until I was an adult. I read for pleasure and I read a lot. Still there aren't many books that I would consider my favorite. They are all my favorite when I'm reading them.

Wow - this is a hard one. I was reading on my own by the time I was 4 - don't really remember what. Vague memory of a picture book version of the Wizard of Oz. There was The Shy Stegosaurus of Cricket Creek and The Garden Under the Sea when I was 8-ish. I still have both of those books. Didn't read Little Women until I was 11-ish and that became one of my all time favorite books even tho I always thought Jo copped out in the end but then again it reflected 19th century social mores. I read a lot of poetry even as a child - some children's level, some not. I had a book of limericks I loved. Essentially tho I read everything that had print on it - cereal boxes to Shakespeare (which I didn't understand). I think words were magic to me from the first time I could read them.

ReplyDeleteI've known you so long, I wasn't surprised by your answer. I know you read a lot, but I had a feeling you didn't read much in childhood. I don't know why, maybe you've told me before.
Well, it's cool you discovered your love for reading and the joy books bring to you now. I knew it was a hard question because it took me awhile to answer it and I do not think I could pick a favorite adult book now, there are so many great ones out there.

ReplyDeleteWow Grace, you're surely well read. I was delighted to know that you still have a copy of your favorite children's books. I love the feeling I get when I remember the books I loved, there's something about the smell of the cover, memories, and stepping into another world when you open the first page that does something for me.
And I love how you read books that you couldn't comprehend, talk about a passion for reading. It's nice to hear from you, you always leave well thought out answers that I know take time, so I appreciate it.
I cannot believe you started reading at the age of four, amazing.
